Let’s just be honest with each other: in general, it’s cheaper to buy non-vegan. When I was a kid, one house gave out full size chocolate bars…and we loved them for it, probably even more than the house that gave out free comic books. That was the late 80’s/early 90’s. Still, find the right sale, you can get regular or even King-Size Hershey bars for less than a dollar, but vegan chocolate bars tend to start around $2 even on sale. If you’re having a party or just staying in to watch horror movies and want to splurge, Go Max Go, Endangered Species, … Continue reading Trick Out Your Halloween With Vegan Candy Treats
Around this time last year, I was starting up a new job at a bank outside Philadelphia, so I had to head into the city to dot Is and cross Ts. On my walk, I passed by the cheerfully decorated Philly Cupcake and couldn’t resist. I asked my typical ingredients questions about gelatin and dairy sources and was informed that they had a small vegan selection. (Three is actually better than some other places that offer maybe one or none.) However, I was curious if the other cupcakes were suitable for vegetarians such as myself, so I took a cue … Continue reading Philly Cupcake Says No To A Show Of Ingredients

For vegans, it was a two for Tuesday special on the season finale, Ice House, episode of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. Vegan bakers Doron Petersan of D.C.’s Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats and Kim Garr of L.A.’s C’est La V Bakeshop went head to head against two traditional cupcake makers for the grand prize. Of the four competitors, Petersan’s cupcakes reigned supreme. During my trip to D.C. this past September, I got the chance to get to visit Sticky Fingers, and I can attest to their damn goodness! Formerly Sticky Fingers Bakery, the shop gave itself a makeover last month. To emphasize their … Continue reading Get Your Fingers Sticky with Cupcake Wars’ Latest Vegan Winner!
If you haven’t seen the new Oreo commercial, it’s adorable. The little girl drips a drop of her milk down the rim, and the camera pans to a plate of just crumbs, then she tells the glass, “Don’t cry milk. I miss them too.” So cute. But if you’ve gone vegetarian or vegan, and you’re likewise addicted to Oreos, don’t worry. You don’t have to miss Oroes. They’re accidentally vegan! So grab a bag and enjoy them with your favorite non-dairy milk alternative, maybe Soy, Almond, Coconut, Hazlenut…or even Hemp. And be sure to check out Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the … Continue reading “Don’t cry milk. I miss them too”
So, I’m sitting here with a salad of romaine lettuce, avocado, banana peppers, and mango dressing. I know, right? I’m eating and searching the internet before I have to go back to work. What I’m looking for are vegan pizzerias in Boston. Going through some pictures on their FB pages, I see Eli’s Earth Bars by Sjaaks, which totally sound healthy but are realy glorified chocolate bars. Yeah, like I need to find anymore chocolates…but yes, I actually do. Come on, we all need a sweet fix now and then. And these are vegan. So…must, find, Sjaaks! Also, interestingly, I found … Continue reading I’m a chocolate monster. The end. Oh, wait! And Vegan Pizza in Boston.
Just ate a big salad before running back to work cause I had nearly a whole 12oz Vegan Peanut Butter and Fudge Bar from my local Whole Foods. The ingredients are peanut butter, vegan margarine, confectioner’s sugar, chocolate, and soymilk. Man I wish they had the calorie counts on their prepared foods so I could know how much I’m eating. (But I’d still eat it anyway!) If your Whole Foods doesn’t make this sweet treat, request that they do. They are really good. And if you don’t have a Whole Foods around, here’s a recipe for the bottom peanut butter part and a recipe … Continue reading A little healthy to wash down my not so healthy.
Dun dun dun. Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. If you’re feeling the pressure of the holiday, running around trying to find the perfect gift or outfit or to make the perfect plans to show someone you love them…STOP! Take a breath. Maybe even check out History.com for more on the day some have come to love…and dread. Maybe even get yourself in the mood with a special little treat. The jury is still out on aphrodisiacs…but give them a try and see for yourself. Judging from Gourmet Sleuth, vegans and vegetarian have a green light…most are fruits and vegetables. Whip something special up…or … Continue reading (S)EXPLORATION: Vegan Aphrodisiacs
