Rocking Queens

The recent heat wave that’s been the bane of many, gave 6,000+ runners a reprieve on Sunday morning. The NYRR Queens 10k, the 3rd in their 5 boroughs series, was a run about Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Forget the 31:21 finish of the top male, I’m just working on chasing down sub 1-hr. I came so close in my first back in April, the Scotland 10k, with 1:00:10. Yep, those 11 seconds kind of haunt me; my resolve is to dig deep in the end, but I’d rested on my assumption that I’d achieved my goal. Despite tacking on a … Continue reading Rocking Queens

Training Kickoff and the Countdown Begins

Today was my first Team ASPCA meeting! I’m excited to start the journey to the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Halloween Half in Los Angeles. I’m particularly excited about this race because it benefits ASPCA. It can get a bit overwhelming trying to weigh corporate sponsors and charity beneficiaries, in addition to price and travel logistics, when deciding on races. With this one, it was a no-brainer. When the meeting was over, I couldn’t resist looking around Jack Rabbit UWS. As I talked with the sales associate, Emily, about navigating the shoe wall while being vegan, she completely understood. She’s vegan … Continue reading Training Kickoff and the Countdown Begins

3000 Steps to the Rock ‘n Roll L.A. Half

My 4th half marathon is fast approaching. I’ve done all I can to prep and now I’m looking to the future. I’ve set my sights on the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in Los Angeles. This half is special because it benefits ASPCA and it’ll be especially fun because it’s Halloween weekend! Since I ran my first 5k in Prospect Park last July, I’ve run a couple more 5ks, a 10k, a couple of obstacle runs, and half marathons in Philadelphia, Bethlehem, and Brooklyn…steadily building up. When I’m running around, I love to represent the animals; sporting Farm Sanctuary, Mercy … Continue reading 3000 Steps to the Rock ‘n Roll L.A. Half

There’s a Vegan Treat waiting for me at the end

Today was the inaugural Runner’s World Half Marathon. The course weaved through the streets of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, home of the once booming Bethlehem Steel factory. Bethlehem is also the home of Vegan Treats, which (no lie) was one of the major draws for me. Back in the late winter, when I registered, I was running the treadmill at my local gym. I’d still not completed my first goal of running Central Park. The inaugural half marathon held by a prominent running magazine in a town home to my favorite bakery seemed like a pretty worthy goal. It also gave me … Continue reading There’s a Vegan Treat waiting for me at the end

Rock Philly

Today I ran the Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in Philadelphia. It being my first half, I was a little nervous. However, as I got dressed and to the start line, I tried to keep in mind the advice Steve Jones gave the day before: ‘Don’t waste your energy on worry.’ I spent the whole time cranking Jason Aldean and thinking to myself: Smile (If you’ve ever read Born To Run, you’ll get this.) When others start walking, just keep running. When I registered, I estimated it would take me 2:45:00. My chip time was 2:24:15. I don’t know how … Continue reading Rock Philly

Running with El Venado

Just finished running in Central Park with ultramarathoner Scott Jurek. (And by “running with” I mean pitifully trailing behind but still amongst the collective.) It’s likely a hundred people gathered for this “Fun Run” preceeding Scott’s talk to promote his new book “Eat & Run.” I’m not a runner. (Note the red face at left.) I run and I am training for a half marathon, but it’s not something that comes naturally to me…but there is something about getting out there. Apparently running wasn’t something Jurek was immediately in love with either. Another thing…he’s vegan! Actually that’s why I chose … Continue reading Running with El Venado

Team ASPCA Hits the Pavement for NYC Half-Marathon

While many will be recovering from St. Patrick’s Day festivities, thousands will be covering just over 13.1. The NYC Half-Marathon takes place today, Sunday, March 18, 2012, starting at 7:30am. Watch live online at New York Road Runners LiveStream and on ABC 7 in NYC. Good luck to all runners! The pack turning out for this event includes Olympic hopefuls like Meb Keflezighi and Kara Goucher, as well as some celebrities and the average Joe or Jane, many running for charity. Seventy-seven charities will be represented at this year’s race, including ASPCA. I just found out about Team ASPCA last Wednesday … Continue reading Team ASPCA Hits the Pavement for NYC Half-Marathon
