Goldilocks and the Three Tofurkys

Few can resist the allure of pizza. It’s a comfort food (carbs) great for social gatherings (easy for sharing…if you must).

Living in NYC and Philly, I’m lucky enough to be able to simply hop a train to really good vegan pizza (Vinnie’s or Blackbird are my taste). (If you have a favorite joint serving the v stuff, shout out below! Sharing is caring.)

For all you DIYers, with your fresh made (or store bought), hand tossed dough…well good for you. Sometimes you just want a two step: open box and shove in hot oven.

For those in suburban areas, Domino’s is an option, but an incomplete one. You can doctor it up yourself…but that’s an extra step…that ends up making that $5 pizza cost you more anyway.

The makers of Tofurky understand. They offer three varieties of frozen pizza: cheese, pepperoni, and supreme style.

To each their own. For me, the Italian sausage and fire roasted veggie was, well, supreme.

Like Goldilocks and her bowls of porridge, my pans of pizza were too this or too that…too much vegan cheese or too much vegan faux meat. The Italian Sausage and Fire Roasted Veggies had the best mix.

In general, all three heat up with a crispy crust and a nice layer of sauce.

  1. I had one of these recently for the first time, the pepperoni. I’m jealous that you evidently have access to other delicious flavors. I was really happy with it – and SO glad that there’s such a thing as vegan frozen pizza!

    1. Oh yeah! I’m glad too. I think Amy’s Kitchen now offers three vegan pizza varieties, but I think only the Soy Cheeze has a cheese substitute on it. I liked all the Tofurky pizzas, but the Cheese and Pepperoni were too much either one way or another for me to love. I added salt on the Cheese and hot sauce on the Pepperoni to mellow them out. The Sausage and Veggies was just more well balanced. I am tempted to get the Cheese again and a pack of Lightlife’s SmartDeli Sliced Pepperoni, try it that way.

  2. I had the cheese one for the first time when I was in the process of moving, and it was my first time eating dayia cheese. I liked the crust it was good but the overall pizza wasn’t that great, but I am hoping to come across the Italian sausage and fire roasted veggie one.

    1. I think it was because I had tried the Italian Sausage and Veggie one first that I decided to give the others a go. The other way around and I’m not sure I’d have given others a go. I’m not super into vegan cheeses. My favorite is Tofutti, but I haven’t come across it shredded yet, and Teese, which I had at the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival but have yet to see it in my local stores. Moves are stressful and I hope you’re happy where you hang your coat now!
