I don’t like to over do it with anything in my diet. So, I tend to pass on soy milk since I like to add soy imitation meat to one of my meals a day. Instead, I pick up Coconut, Almond, or (my fave) Hazlenut milk. Even so, I checked out Silk cause I had a coupon. The coupon wasn’t for them, but when I saw the seasonal flavors, I couldn’t resist: Nog, Chocolate Mint, and Pumpkin Spice.
My local Whole Foods didn’t have the Pumpkin Spice, but I bought the other two. Not the cheapest items in the case, but they make great treats. I had the Mint Chocolate for Christmas and Nog for New Year. Both are really creamy, not watered-down tasting. The mint isn’t too overpowering in the one and the Nog has a stronger taste. I haven’t tried adding alcohol to it, though it was suggested, cause it already has a bite…if not the buzz.
Even when I was a big carnivore, and though I still eat cooked eggs or products with eggs in them, I’d never liked the idea of drinking something with raw eggs in it. This is the way to have it without the worry.
Be aware of the calorie differences though. The Mint Chocolate quart has 4 servings at 90 calories a cup. The Nog quart, though, has 8 servings at 90 calories a half cup…180 calories in a cup. Pumpkin Spice falls in the middle with 170 calories in a cup serving. All are Dairy-free, Lactose-free, and Cholesterol-free.
Also, visit the Recipe section of their website to find recipes by types such as Vegan, Vegetarian, and Lowfat, recipes that use different Silk flavors, and by meal.
Lastly, I did email Silk to find out when and for how long they sell their seasonal varieties for. I’ll pass it on when they get back to me.
