If you know me (or have read a little of my blog) you know I have a sweet tooth. One of my major weaknesses is Godiva. I’ve been a card carrying member of their rewards program for months, and I even convinced a friend to join too. Hey, can’t beat a free piece of chocolate each month, right? Well…in the summer was when I started hearing about (or maybe just started paying attention to) sugar processed through bone char. Since I love the taste of their sweet little morsels, I emailed Godiva to ask if they use refineries that use bone char. The response (below) was less than satisfying. I emailed a follow up question asking which refineries they do use so that I could look into it myself and received no reply at all. For months now still, I have been consuming Godiva even though I did not receive a complete answer; saying to myself, ‘Well I don’t know for sure, so what’s the harm?’ But, come on, let’s be honest. No answer is an answer. So yesterday, when I was walking through the mall and realized it was the beginning of the month, I said enough. Now, I may still be ignorantly consuming other foods containing sugar processed with bone char, but I’m working to find out more and more. Nevertheless, I opened the can of worms with Godiva, I have to pay attention to what came out. So, until I get a direct answer, I’m getting Godiva off my conscience. A company as large as Godiva should be aware of where and how their ingredients are sourced. If they don’t know or won’t tell me, I sure do not need to be putting their products into my body.
Dear Ms. Leonard,

I do know that our products are not made with any animal products including the ones listed below. However, I am unaware of the processing of the sugar from our distributors, so I would not be able to give you an answer with 100% certainty, I do apologize.
