Rooftop Films presents Bovines this Thursday

When I was a kid, I loved rolling into the drive-in with my siblings, hopping into the hatch back trunk, and having a good time. Watching a movie in the open air is a treat. Rooftop Films is taking it to a new level, literally. This New York based non-profit is dedicated to bringing independent films to light, showing them in parks and on rooftops throughout the city.

For animals lovers, the series is showing Bovines on Thursday, May 31st at The Old American Can Factory.

In the fields, one sees them, wide in grass or grazing peacefully. Large placid animals which one believes to know because they are livestock. Lions, gorillas, bear have all our attention, but did one ever really look at cows?

Tickets are $12. Doors open at 8pm; film begins at 9pm.

Veg Out at Prospect Park Green Market

The weather is getting warmer on the east coast, baby! I was so delighted, I broke out my bike and pedaled several miles to Prospect Park, Brooklyn and was suprised to stumble upon the Prospect Park Green Market! I knocked back a Mint Iced Tea with Maple Syrup, picked up some Maple Syrup candies, and delighted to see Body & Soul serving up some goodies. My Herbed Risotto Sol-Roll was creamy with just a little crunch; so delicious. If you live in or near Prospect Park, head over on Saturdays. If not, still get out and maybe find some Farmers’ Markets in your areas!

Gettin’ Down at Veggie Prom 2012

I found out about the Veggie Prom the day of. So I ran to H&M on my lunch break and bought a dress from the sale rack and my ticket online. Unlike my high school prom, Veggie Prom was only $10…and the best I’ve spent in a while. Not an exaggeration. The organizers did an amazing job!

Virtual Vegan Potluck: Sweetened Collard Greens

I’m so happy you could make it to the Virtual Vegan Potluck! Thanks for saving a little room for the sides. If you skipped ahead of the line, feel welcome to go back to the beginning and fill up your plate.

For my recipe, I took a cue from Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Sweet & Salty Carrots and sweetened a veggie you wouldn’t necessarily think of in this way. Hope you enjoy!

1/4 cup Balsamic Vinegar

1/2 cup Agave Nectar

dash of salt

20 oz Chopped Collard Greens (fresh, canned, or frozen; drained)

dozen Grape Tomatoes, halved

  • Preheat over to 350 degrees
  • Fold together collard greens and tomatoes
  • Spread out in pan
  • Whisk agave and balsamic vinegar
  • Pour over greens
  • Sprinkle with a dash of salt
  • Bake 45mins to an hour

Klein’s Ice Cream House

Visited 05/06/2012

Finally, I got to the Klein’s Ice Cream House in Boro Park. They offer dairy-based and non-dairy ice creams, plus sorbet (non-dairy) and soft serve (dairy); everything is kosher. The ice cream cartons are labeled certified by Vegan.org. I was really surprised they do have non-dairy cakes.

Their dairy-based selection is bigger than their non-dairy options; I looked at some flavors and wished they were vegan. In the non-dairy case, I eyed the Kiwi Sorbet hard. This time up to bat, though, I went for the Cookies and Cream and the Butter Pecan. The Butter Pecan won out.

Verdict: While Lula’s and Stogo trump for taste, it’s still a good product and the price of Klein’s is a bit more standard ($3 for two scoops). When you’re in Boro Park, Williamsburg, or Flatbush and craving a chilled, sweet treat, head over to the Ice Cream House.

A Taste of Thai in Astoria

Visited 05/06/2012

Astoria is not exactly a vegan mecca. So I was happy to find Three E Taste of Thai. It’s a clean place with an attentive wait staff. After stopping at place after place in the area with pretty much no luck, spotting the vegetarian appetizer section on their menu made me hopeful.

I wasn’t sure of the situation with co-mingling foods and I have been splurging on calories, so I decided to go light with a Nature Summer Roll and Papaya Salad. The restaurant must be aware of how bland the salad is considering how much dressing was dumped on top, which worked out because I needed something to give taste to the summer roll; the hint of mint was not enough.

Typically, my sister can fare better in restaurants that serve meat; I’ll be bummed at the lackluster attention to the veggies.

She had accidentally been given my summer roll and tried a piece, which gave her something to laugh at me about as I choked it down. Other than that, and the rice that seemed to be missing its instruction manual, we ate in peace.

She got her leftovers to go and we continued on our way. A block later, the bag of leftovers swung upwards and down, right into a trash can.

“You didn’t like it?”

“Well, I don’t want to judge on the first try…but we never have to go there again,” which pretty much sums it up.

While she liked the Crab Rangoon, she went on to describe her Larb Chicken as “a can of chicken dropped on a salad” and the rice as the worst she’d ever had. (The rice was served in a wicker cup, that I thought was on the table for decoration. When she opened it, her prize was a ball of rice in plastic wrap. The rice ended up being a sticky lump she might sooner have picked up and eaten like a bread roll then jab at it with her fork, and maybe she should have.)

Verdict: When you’re wondering and hungry, sometimes an oasis can be a mirage.

A Light Goes Out in Brooklyn

Veganism is not a cure-all. Beastie Boy Adam Yauch turned to a predominately organic/vegan diet to aid his cancer recovery. Sadly though, after fighting for nearly 3 years to party out into old age, Adam died today at only 47. Click to read more.
